The Best Mobile Gaming Controller for Beginners

Best for beginners

Mobile gaming has come a long way in the last 10 years. Casual games, like Angry Birds and Candy Crush, helped to bring it into the mainstream with their simple, yet addictive, gameplay and as the technology improved, so did the games that were on offer.

Playing first-person shooters, like PlayerUnknoen’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Call of Duty, on nothing more than a smartphone once seemed like a distant dream but thankfully, we can enjoy amazing games like that anytime and anywhere. Even fans of retro emulation are discovering just how easy it is to get their daily dose of nostalgia using the device sitting in their pocket.

Here at, we’re all about taking it to the next level and there’s no better way to do that than with a mobile gaming controller. Nothing beats the feeling of having a real physical controller in your hand even if you’re only emulating Super Nintendo or GameBoy Games.

There are many controllers to choose from and they all claim to do it bigger and better than the last guy, so today we’re going to take a look at some of the best mobile gaming controllers for beginners!

iPega Red Knight

Brand: iPega

Name/Model: PG-9087

Price: $29.99

Operating System: Android 6.0 or above, iOS 11.0 or above

Best Place to Buy: Amazon

One of the most accessible controllers on the market, the iPega Red Knight is a great starter controller for anybody that’s using one for the first time. It’s very easy to connect to your mobile device via Bluetooth and will easily be detected by most of the popular emulators used today.

I think the sleek red and black color palette looks great and the telescopic design means that it can stretch to fit any smartphone up to 6.2 inches and I was able to fit both my phones in without a problem. If you’re a fan of retro emulation, then I highly recommend you pick this controller up.

iPega Ninja

Brand: iPega

Name/Model: PG-9157

Price: $26.99

Operating System: Android 6.0 or above, iOS 11.0 or above

Best Place to Buy: Amazon

Hands down, the iPega Ninja is one of the most underrated mobile gaming controllers available right now. While it may not be the most high-end controller on this list, it’s one of the most affordable and a great starter controller for anybody trying to replicate that real console feel.

This is the very first mobile gaming controller that I started with and It’s still one of my best purchases to date. While there isn’t a lot of support from mainstream titles, it was very easy to connect to my favorite retro emulators and once I had the PSP version of God of War installed, it really felt like I had a PlayStation console in my pocket.

GameSir F4 Falcon

Brand: GameSir

Name/Model: F4

Price: $29.99

Operating System: All mainstream Android and iOS Devices

Best Place to Buy: Amazon

Controller support has been a controversial subject for quite some time when it comes to the more high-end multiplayer games. Without direct support for low-end controllers, you need a separate app to map the controller buttons to the screen but this counts as using third-party software and is an offense that can get your account banned.

Luckily, we have, what I like to call, hybrid controllers like this that attach to your phone externally and use trigger buttons that behave like the Left and Right triggers on an Xbox controller. You’ll still be using the touch screen as well but, with a device like this attached, you can play Call of Duty: Mobile without any problems.

I used external triggers a lot during the last season and I would recommend hybrid controllers to anybody looking for an affordable way to play games like Call of Duty: Mobile with a controller.

SteelSeries Stratus Duo

Brand: SteelSeries

Name/Model: Stratus Duo

Price: $49.99

Operating System: Android 3.1 and above

Best Place to Buy: Amazon

Steelseries has always been known for delivering premium gaming accessories, like keyboards, mice, and headsets, and their range of Bluetooth controllers lives up to that glorious reputation. Its design resembles some of the most well-known console controllers and performs like one too.

It caters specifically to PC and Android users, making it one of the best high-end controllers for mobile gaming and definitely worth the price. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a long term investment or if you’re looking to upgrade from one of the starter controllers mentioned above.

Xbox Wireless Controller

Brand: Microsoft

Name/Model: Xbox One

Price: $64.99

Operating System: Android 3.1 and above

Best Place to Buy: Amazon

Now, I know this may surprise a lot of people since this is a controller meant for a console that already exists, but it is absolutely possible to connect a wireless Xbox One controller to your Android smartphone or tablet. Best of all, you can use it to play Call of Duty: Mobile as well.

Yes, it is one of the few controllers supported by the game and the setup is almost effortless. This may be a bit more on the high-end but I thought it was worth putting on this list since Xbox controllers are becoming a lot more affordable and there is simply no better mobile gaming experience out there right now.

So if you’re looking to dive in with the very best, I recommend you get a regular Xbox One controller.

If I Had to Pick One?

If I started my journey into mobile gaming again, I would definitely pick the iPega Red Knight as my starter controller, especially since I mostly use my controllers for retro emulation and it has such an affordable price that it made a great introduction to the next level.

Buuuut…I’m a huge fan of Call of Duty: Mobile ranked mode as well and I absolutely love the hybrid controller method. It gives me more versatility with my button layout and allows for some more dynamic gameplay, just like the 4-finger claw method used by many YouTubers.

Do you use a mobile gaming controller when you play mobile games? Which controllers would you recommend? Let me know in the comments section below.

Thank you so much for sharing with us an interesting and research article. You certainly know a lot about it. I have learned a lot by reading your article and it’s just what I was looking for. I like GameSir F4 Falcon the most. On my younger brother’s birthday, he got a mobile gaming controller just like it and he honestly can’t stop using it.

I’ll be sure to share this with others I know that want to buy a controller.

Great article! I am a retro gamer, I don’t get the feel until I am using a controller or a keyboard. Because of that, I am always playing games on my PC. I tried to play mobile games but honestly, I am just not able to get comfortable with it. This is why I use a PC emulator to install and enjoy mobile games in a PC environment (pretty funny right!).

These game controllers are like a boon for gamers like me who want to get that feel of a retro controller. I like the second one because it is practically a classic controller modified for a mobile phone and that is super awesome.

Thanks for sharing this article, really appreciate it!

      Hi, Vinayak

Thanks for stopping by. I also used to emulate a lot on PC but there’s just something about the portability of mobile gaming controllers that keeps mee coming back for more. There really is one out there for anybody.

Let me ask you – are these the controllers that you play with without a screen like a TV that you need to connect too?

I remember when I was at school in the seventies and eighties, these handheld games were the in thing, and you weren’t cool if you didn’t own one of them. If you are a games lover then there is nothing better than having the game with you everywhere you go so that you can pop it out to play when you have a spare moment in your day or you are standing in a long queue.

But technology has certainly come a long way since then.

    1. StevieMAX says:

      Hi, Michel

By connecting a mobile gaming controller to your phone you can essentially replicate the devices that you are referring to. Once you have a controller connected, it is the same thing.
