Best Wired Xbox Controller in 2021 – Better Than Wireless?

Best Wired Controller for Xbox

If you ask the majority of Xbox gamers, they’ll tell you they paying using a wireless controller connected via Bluetooth but more and more, gamers are looking for a more old skool approach by directly connecting their controllers to the console or even PC if they prefer it over mouse and keyboard.

While it may not make much sense to the average game, it certainly has its appeal to those that dabble in the more competitive side of things and need perfect and precise inputs from their controller. It might seem small but those extra milliseconds of input lag can be all the difference to the average Call of Duty sweats.

Console players are all usually couch commandos and having a wireless controller is essential for any lounge setup, especially for casual gamers, and being connected by a wire can be cumbersome at best. But if you’re like and have your console set up next to your PC, or use a controller on PC, you might see the benefits of a wired connection.

It all comes down to personal preference and many third-party controllers are ready to be your only gaming peripheral for all your gaming needs and so that’s exactly what we’re going to look at today. So, without further ado, here’s the best wired Xbox controller in 2021.

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller

Product: Wired Gaming Controller

Brand: PowerA

Price: $34.99

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

When I first started using mobile gaming controllers, PowerA was the name that everybody kept telling me about. The MOGA controller was specifically designed for Xbox Cloud Gaming and it impressed me a lot, to say the least. So I wasn’t surprised to find out that they made controllers for the console side of things as well.

But, unlike the mobile variation that works via Bluetooth as well, this controller is strictly wired and can be plugged into your PC as well as your Xbox controller. It comes with 2 programmable buttons on the back as well, making it an ideal companion for first-person shooters with the lack of input lag.

It also features its own independent volume control so you don’t have to cycle through menus just to make some minor adjustments to the levels. Add that to the share button that’s included for all those gaming on a Series X/S and you’ve got a perfect candidate for your wired controller needs.

While all these features are great, the key factor will always be affordability. A wired controller might not be a replacement for your daily driver making it ideal for those that simply want to add to their collection and have a wired substitute whenever they play on a PC.

Razer Wolverine V2

Product: Wired Gaming Controller

Brand: Razer

Model: Wolverine V2

Price: $99.97

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

Razer has, for a very long time, been at the forefront of premium peripherals but it wasn’t their keyboards and mice that first drew my attention. The Razer Kishi has been at the top of my list of mobile gaming controllers for a while now but today, we’re looking at the wired controller they made for Xbox.

It’s a vast improvement over the original and is designed in a much more ergonomic way that outs player comfort first. There are plenty of re-mappable buttons for you to customize and make even the most minute adjustments to each thumbstick to ensure you get the right response every time.

The one thing that I don’t quite understand is the position of the re-mappable buttons though. They’re usually put on the back of the controller so that your unused fingers can access them easily and just don’t make sense to me being directly next to the trigger but I’m sure it’s a position I could get used to.

That being said, I do definitely miss the buttons you get on the back in other versions of the Wolverine and it’s a shame that it doesn’t have the ‘Elite status that you want from a controller like this.

PDP Gaming Wired Controller

Product: Wired Gaming Controller

Brand: PDP

Price: $24.99

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

PDP is one of the newest contenders to join the fray and provide top-quality third-party accessories for many different consoles, including the Nintendo Switch. They may be expertly crafted and well designed but all our attention today is on the spectacular line-up of third-party controllers for Xbox.

Just like the controller from PowerA, it features its own independent volume controls that are a little more discreet. The only addition to the layout is a function key that, when held down, turns the controller’s own D-pad into adjustable volume buttons. It’s a lot more convenient than trudging through menus to adjust the volume.

And, at such an affordable price, it’s with looking into if you’re not looking for a premium entry point like with the Razer. There’s a lot of room for improvement overall, but it’s hard to argue the flaws when you’re buying a controller that might not be your primary peripheral.

Amazon Rating:

Which One To Pick?

Without a doubt, I would have to go with the PowerA enhanced. The Wolverine is only a small improvement over the original Xbox controller and doesn’t offer many of the pro features you find on the previous versions of this exact same controller. Not to mention the fact that the PDP controller has a long way to go before it can be considered a contender.

I just can’t get over the fact that there aren’t any buttons on the back since I can get similar functionality out of first-person shooters when I use the Bumper-Jumper control scheme and that’s all that this layout encourages me to do. The PowerA gets all the basics right and I’d even rate it above the original Xbox One controller.

Have you tried any of these third-party controllers? What do you think is the better choice for a wired peripheral? Let me know in the comments section below.

While all the latest trends are leaning towards the wireless controller, my personal feelings are that I like the classic style and that includes the wired controller.  I currently have the powerA and I love it.  It looks and feels like the classic and this enhances the gaming experience.  I always feel a small amount of worry with wireless controllers in that they will lose connection right at the vital moment.
