Best Mobile Gaming Controller for PPSSPP Games

best mobile gaming controller for psp

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is, by far, one of the most popular handheld consoles to be released and quickly became a classic much like the GameBoy Advanced. For the first time in gaming history, you could have console-quality graphics on the go and play amazing titles, like Assassins Creed, whenever and wherever you please.

Decades have passed since then and the technology has vastly improved, so much so that we can now recreate that gaming magic using nothing more than a smartphone or tablet, and a retro games emulator like the PPSSPP. As the name suggests, it allows you to play PSP games on your Android device using your regular touchscreen for the controls.

But, as you can imagine, seeing all the controls on-screen at the same time can be a bit distracting and will ultimately block a lot of what’s meant to be seen in the game. That’s why I highly recommend using a mobile gaming controller to take your mobile gaming experience to the next level.

This is how I personally got my start into retro gaming and I’ve loved how easy it was to use a controller to play my favorite games and I now use one every single time I get on PPSSPP. So today, I thought we’d take a look at five of the best mobile gaming controllers to use on PPSSPP games.

iPega Red Knight

Brand: iPega

Name/Model: PG-9087S

Price: $29.99

Operating System: Android and Windows PC

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

When it comes to replicating the full PSP experience, there’s no better candidate than the iPega 9087S, also known as the Red Knight. It’s a telescopic controller that stretches out to fit comfortably around any phone less than 6.2 inches in length, turning your Android smartphone into a true handheld gaming device.

The red and black design is really sleek and comes alive with red backlighting as well. The physical buttons make a great substitute for the touch screen controls and the two analog sticks work great with only a few dead zones.

Highly recommended if you want to keep your setup as one complete unit.

SteelSeries Stratus Duo

Brand: SteelSeries

Name/Model: Stratus Duo

Price: $49.99

Operating System: Android and Windows PC

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

Now, for those looking for a mobile gaming controller that can deliver a more premium experience, look no further than the SteelSeries Stratus Duo. Not only is it one of the coolest looking controllers on the block, but it’s also the only controller that comes close to the console-quality we’re all familiar with.

It looks and feels like it was meant for an Xbox but it connects effortlessly to your Android device and, when paired with a tablet, it genuinely feels like I have my own portable console.

iPega Ninja

Brand: iPega

Name/Model: PG-9157

Price: $25.98

Operating System: Android 6.0 or above, iOS 11.0 or above

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

Now, for the same epic experience but at a far more affordable price, look no further than the iPega PG-9157. While it may not be the best controller on this list, it’s definitely one of the most underrated and a great starter controller for anybody using retro emulators for the first time.

The buttons are really responsive and the quality makes it extremely affordable. This was the very first controller that I used and it was so easy to get connected and start playing that it inspired me to use mobile gaming controllers more often and I recommend it to anyone looking for an easy introduction.

iPega Wolverine

Brand: iPega

Name/Model: PG-9099

Price: $26.99

Operating System: Android and Windows PC

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

iPega is known for making some of the most affordable controllers around so it’s no wonder that we have another one on this list. If you want something just like the Ninja but with a few more flashy extras as well, look no further than the iPega Wolverine.

Hands down, it is one of the most premium low-end controllers you can get your hands on. It’s got amazing backlighting for all the buttons and, unlike its Ninja cousin, has a rubber grip on the handles and dual shock vibration as well, which, altogether, delivers a next-level mobile gaming experience.

It even comes with a built-in telescopic phone clip as well, that’s why it’s highly recommended for anybody looking for a long-lasting companion to your Android smartphone or tablet.

Xbox One Controller

Brand: Microsoft

Name/Model: Xbox One

Price: $69.99

Operating System: Android and Windows PC

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

No list would be complete without the absolute best controller on the market. Believe it or not, you can actually use an Xbox One controller on your Android smartphone or tablet, it truly delivered one of the most premium mobile gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

Its design is so sleek and so comfortable that it’s been replicated countless times and it’s easy to see why. Plus, I am a die-hard fan of Call of Duty: Mobile and this is one of the few controllers that are officially supported by the game, so there’s really no better place to start when it comes to the absolute best in mobile gaming control.

Take it To the Next Level

Retro Emulation has come a long way and, amazingly, we can relive all those classic games with technology that’s ten times better than the consoles it was meant for. Add a mobile gaming controller into the mix and you’ve got a truly next-level experience when it comes to mobile gaming and playing PPSSPP games.

If I had to recommend just one, then it would have to be the iPega Wolverine. Its comfortable, affordable, and truly delivers on the level you would expect from such a recognized controller franchise.

I have played PPSSPP games for a while now and I love the fact that I can relive the play station portable days again but it’s striking me now that I didn’t know that I could actually combine some great controllers to play it on my mobile phone. This is really great and it should be very enjoyable. I think I’ll get one from ipega. The information you have given is very helpful to me. I’m grateful.

    1. StevieMAX says:

Yeah man, iPega is the way to go when you’re just starting out using a mobile gaming controller. Hope you get a good one!

  2. Roy says:

I have always wanted but never had a PSP portable console. I have nevertheless wondered about how it is to have good control over the game you are playing with such a game console. And now that the technology has evolved you can play these games via PPSSPP emulator on your mobile phone. That is great and I think I need to consider getting such a controller.

By the way, doesn´t the mobile phone screen become a bit too small to have a great game experience? What do you think?

From your review, I would definitively go for the Ipeg Wolverine. For a very affordable price you get good quality that should provide you with good game experience.

    1. StevieMAX says:

Most smartphone screens are even bigger than the PSP screen and offer a higher resolution. It shouldn’t be a problem

  3. Nimrodngy says:

One of my passions is games, and if I can do it on PlayStation or laptop consoles, it means that now with these mobile controllers I can do it easily on any smartphone. I have an iPhone 7 and I can say that my favorite controller is iPega Ninja. A big advantage for me is that the price on Amazon is only $ 25 considering that I found controllers on other sites at prices over $ 100.
Thanks a lot for this opportunity and I hope to see other equally interesting posts here on your site.

    1. StevieMAX says:

The iPega ninjas was my first controller and I’m sure you’ll love it too.

I’m impressed on how we can revive all these classics. I have so many good memories and even family memories playing these titles with my dad. I have made up my mind to purchase one of the controllers listed here and I think my best choice is iPega Red Knight. Thank you very much for this review.

    1. StevieMAX says:

      No problem, Paolo.

You won’t go wrong with the Red Knight!

    Hi Stevie MAX,

Currently I am using iPhone and thus a lot of games are not running on this platfrom. I have already started looking at new Android phone, and your article on gaming using Android phone pushes me for more reason to get one.

With the external gaming controller to co-exist with the smartphone, it will broaden the video screen for more gaming experiences. I fully agreed with this arrangement.

I was trying to access the link of your recommended product iPega Red Knight to Amazon, however the link is not working. Could you advise what happened? The price you stated on your site seem a fairly good price point for gaming beginner like me.

Xbox One Controller from Microsoft has the most expensive price point among all your recommended gaming controller. Compare its featureas and performance, it is worthwhile to get one if you are serious player.

    1. StevieMAX says:

Thank you for the heads up, That link should be working fine now.

      Thanks again for stopping by

  8. Nath says:

This is really great list you got here. Honestly, I have actually been looking for a good controller for my mobile phone and this makes the process so much easier. Being able to play ppsspp games using external controllers apart from th basic controls displayed on phone is really great and I must say that it’s the only way to play mobile games these days. Thanks so much for sharing, you’ve helped to make my choice a lot easier.

    1. StevieMAX says:

      Hi, Nath

Glad I could be of assistance, let me know which controller you choose.

Thanks for sharing this very well written and informative article with us all. I have to say that i found it to be a very interetsing and captivating read indeed. I have only fairly recently started playing games on the computer or Xbox so i’m still at the catching up stage when it comes to all the different things you can get

    1. StevieMAX says:

      Mobile gaming is the way!

  10. Kelly says:

I love playing games on my phone, but those games don’t normally require a controller. That seems a bit extreme…. saying that. Sonic! Minecraft! the more I think of it the more I can see games that I can play on my phone where I would love a controller. It’d be like having my old game boy back. I need a list of awesome phone games that need a controller now. Suddenly this seems like the best idea I’ve heard all year.

    1. StevieMAX says:

Thanks, Kelly. Hope you enjoy mobile gaming with a controller?

  11. Dwayne says:

Oh yes +1 for old faithful – the Xbox One!  Haven’t tried wiring it up to a tablet for a bigger screen. All of the other look great and reviews are good. Concerned about the ‘feel’ but the Stratus looks like the best bet there, plus it rigs to a tablet without too much trouble. Thanks for the comparisons Stevie, it really helps. Cheers!

    1. StevieMAX says:

Thanks for stopping by, Dwayne. Glad you found this article useful

  12. Vasile says:

I haven’t played PPSSPP games for a while and I like the fact that I can remember portable play stations, but it worries me now that I didn’t know that I could actually combine some great controllers to play them on my mobile phone. it’s loud and it should be very nice. I’ll get one from ipega. The information you have given is helpful.
I don’t play much, but the details give me a try.

There are new things for me, I have to deepen them.

iPega Wolverine is also my favorite.

    1. StevieMAX says:

With so many compatible emulators, and even the advancements in could gaming, mobile controllers are becoming more and more widespread. iPega is the best controller for beginners in my book

  13. Iris says:

Great website! really professionally done! Well written and very informative. I’m very new to mobile gaming but never realised that there were so many options for me to take my gaming experience to the next level. Thank you for sharing this list, a lot of good information. Have a great day!

    1. StevieMAX says:

Thank you, I’m glad you found this article useful!

  14. Augustine says:

Hey, I enjoyed the post and in fact, it has brought back my memories of playing handheld games. The best advantage of handheld games is mobility with no compromise for console-level graphics. A combination of both is something great! Thank you for reviewing and giving so many options, I think I liked the iPega Wolverine. I will look into this seriously to see if I can enjoy this! Thanks a lot

    1. StevieMAX says:

Yes, it’s true. Portability is the main appeal of mobile gaming and it’s great that those experiences can be improved with a controller.

      Thanks for stopping by, Augustine

  15. Matiss says:

Yes, yes, yes, I agree with that on so many levels. I mean, to me, the notion of buttons on the screen is just suboptimal. I don’t like that. I absolutely agree that it blocks a lot of what you should be seeing. To me, it just, in a sense, ruins the experience.

I actually had no idea there was the option to add a controller to the android. That’s really, really neat. I mean, that fixes everything for me. Plus, I love the fact that they are affordable as well. To that end, the iPega options look absolutely busted. I mean, it costs less than a movie night.

I really appreciate the insights. Cheers.

    1. StevieMAX says:

No problem, Matiss. It’s the same reason I started using controllers aswell. Glad you found this article useful.

  16. Nicholas Commander says:

I have always wanted to get more involved in the mobile and handheld gaming field but I did not feel confident in my knowledge of the products. This article is so cool to read and makes me feel really excited about playing a PPSSPP game. I really appreciate how you sorted out each product and explained very clearly and fully the pros and cons of each. This makes me feel so much better about starting to play PPSSPP games!

    1. StevieMAX says:

Thanks, Nicholas. Portable gaming has certainly come a long way. Glad you found this article useful.
